GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1. GLP-1 medications are a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists that act on natural hormone pathways in the body. Some GLP-1 medications also act on another hormone pathway called GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide).
Clinicians may consider this when tailoring a prescription plan to individual needs.
Compounded GLP-1 medications may not be right for everyone and may have certain side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, or reduced appetite. In rare cases, they may lead to more serious reactions, including pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, kidney problems, or severe gastrointestinal symptoms.
GLP-1s should not be used by individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Always discuss your full medical history and any medications you take with your licensed provider before starting therapy.

Research published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism shows that GLP-1 medications regulate hunger hormones, helping users eat less without feeling deprived - a key reason why other diets often fail.
A study in The Lancet found that GLP-1 treatments not only aid in weight loss but also improve blood sugar control, cholesterol levels, and heart health, making them a powerful tool for overall well-being.
Tirzepatide and Semaglutide personalized treatments for obesity are widely prescribed by healthcare professionals to help patients achieve long-term success.
